Nafplion is found just 11 kms away from Vivari, is magical city that was the first capital of Greece after it was freed form the Turkish and as such has a rich variety of historical monuments, castles and museums. Nafplion's old τοςν has a magical air about it and the narrow streets with their Venetian style overhanging balconies are lined with shops, cafes and tavernas. A particular favourite is the worry bead shops and makers who do a roaring trade all year round. The town is a magnet to tourists all year round and is particularly popular with Athenians for weekend breaks given its short distance from Athens.
Nafplio's history stretches back to ancient times, but it truly reached it's peak during the medieval period. The city was named after Nauplius, a hero of Greek mythology who was considered the founder of the city. Over the centuries, Nafplio was occupied by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving an evident mark on the city's architecture. Nafplio became the capital of the newly established Greek state in 1829, following the country's War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. It remained the capital until 1834 when Athens took over the role. Despite losing its status as the capital, Nafplio retained its importance as a cultural and political center, and it continues to be one of Greece’s most beloved cities.
Visit the "Pili tis Ksiras" - the old land gate from medieval times, the Palamidi castle that towers above the town with its 999 steps to the top or take a short boat trip to the Bourtzi castle found in harbour, probably THE most photographed castle/islet in Greece. The Acronafplia castle deserves a visit, as does the Pente Adelfia/Psaromachala area at the top of the old town. Nafplion is home to a unique variety of museums, visit the newly refurbished Archaeological Museum in Syntagma Square, the Folklore Museum, the Military Museum, the Toy Museum, the Worry Bead Museum and the Ouzo Museum (where one may also see the product being made and attend a tasting). Nafplion is a romantic city with a rare charm and holds something for everyone, making it a must to visit!
The Venetians left a lasting impact on Nafplio, as seen in the city's architecture, fortifications, and even the local dialect, which contains remnants of Venetian words.
