Athens

Athens, the cradle of Western civilization, is a city full of history, culture, and mythology. Located about 150 kilometers from Vivari in Argolida, Athens is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It is home to some of the most iconic landmarks of ancient Greece, including the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

The area of Athens has been continuously inhabited for over 3,000 years and is widely regarded as the birthplace of democracy. The city was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, who after a quarrel with Poseidon about who the city should be named after, won the favor of the people by offering them the olive tree, a symbol of peace and prosperity. Athens was a cultural, political, and intellectual centre of ancient Greece, home to some of the most famous philosophers, artists, and playwrights of all time including Socrates, Plato, and Sophocles.

Athens is deeply intertwined with Greek mythology. According to legend, the city was founded by the mythical king Theseus, who united the various communities of Attica into a single state. Theseus is also famous for slaying the Minotaur in the labyrinth of Crete and is celebrated as one of the greatest heroes of ancient Greece.

The mythological contest between Athena and Poseidon for the patronage of the city is another significant story. Poseidon struck the Acropolis with his trident, creating a saltwater spring, while Athena offered the olive tree. The people of Athens chose Athena’s gift, and the city was named in her honor.

The Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most famous landmark in Athens and serves as a symbol of the city’s glorious past. The Parthenon, the temple dedicated to Athena, stands majestically atop the Acropolis and is a symbol of the once bright ancient Greek civilization. The site also includes the Erechtheion, known for its Caryatids (sculpted female figures serving as architectural supports), and the Temple of Athena Nike, which celebrates the goddess of victory.
